We all know about the Dhantewada massacre carried out by Naxals. Yesterday's attack is a clear indication of the fact that Naxals are no longer at loggerheads with the State but the civilians as well. Today, Chattisgarh has become the most unsafe place to reside in, and the BJP Government there looks hapless. G.K.Pillai, the Home Secretary said, "The Naxals have challenged the very basis of Indian democracy and if they are not stopped, they would take over the country by 2020"
I literally had goosebumps on hearing this. Ever since I have been wondering as to how can we tackle the Naxal menace..
We all know that the long term solution would be to develop infrastructure in rural areas : more schools, hospitals, roads, etc.. Inclusive growth is the hour of the need. Also, the Art of Living's YLTP (Youth Leadership Training Programme) would help a great deal in empowering the local youths. All these are an ongoing process, but the real question is what should be the short term solution? Should the state declare a war against Naxals, or should it go for talks? According to the Home Minister, Maoists have out rightly rejected the idea of talks and have just one clear motive in their mind and that is to overthrow the entire idea of Indian democracy. Also, there are several reports doing rounds about atrocities committed by the Army and Special Police forces (SPF's) on the local villagers. The ground reality is something which I assume we all are unaware of.
here are my suggestions for the Home Minister :
-> Work on greater State-Centre coordination. It was heartening to see the BJP High Command praising Chidambaram's work. We need both the Congress and the BJP to be on the same side of the coin i.e. a strong common policy against the Naxals. All the states have to work together to ensure that Naxals do not benefit out of petty politics.
-> Win local's support by immediately starting infrastructural development and giving more power to local bodies. Together with the NGO's, the State Government can ensure that the villagers have the basic amenities at their disposal, and that inclusive growth takes place benefiting all the sections of the society.
-> Work more on intelligence data and equipping the army and the local cops with the latest technology. AK-47 cannot be fought with a Pistol. For AK-47, you need an AK-47 and nothing less.
Some might argue that how can talking about Naxalism on a blog can solve the actual problem?
or can the t.v debates and newspaper editorials help the cause?
Eventually, the war against Maoists must be won in the villages of Chattisgarh, not in t.v. studios or Internet blogs.
Shanti Shanti Shanti.
love,
Siddharth
